Seaton Delaval Hall, the Curtain Rises: Project gains Heritage Lottery Fund support

The National Trust’s ambition for Seaton Delaval Hall has received a significant boost, following a successful round one application approval from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

The romantic and partly-ruined, Seaton Delaval Hall is a true gem of the North East but it has deteriorated badly over the centuries. Despite the late Lord Hasting’s efforts to revive it in the 1970s, it remains at risk if the National Trust cannot continue to consolidate and safeguard the buildings and the surrounding landscape.

HLF has awarded the project its initial support* and a development grant of £150,000 to enable the National Trust to develop the plans and apply for a full grant of £3.8m at a later date.

The Curtain Rises is a project the National Trust hopes will deliver essential conservation and repair work to the Hall and the surrounding buildings that are at greatest risk.  It will enhance the welcome for visitors by investing in much-needed facilities.  Most importantly, it will bring to life Seaton Delaval’s rich and varied story by creating new interpretation around the famous, and often infamous, Delaval Family.  At the heart of the project will be a volunteer and community programme creating new ways for the community to connect with this very special place.

Robyn Brown, assistant director of operations for the National Trust in the North East, said: “We are delighted that our application for Seaton Delaval Hall to Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has got through the first round. We are looking forward to working on our application for the second round, to further shape our plans for the conservation of Seaton Delaval Hall.”

Ivor Crowther, Head of HLF North East, said: “Seaton Delaval Hall and its historic surroundings are of outstanding significance but its future development was uncertain, the Curtain Rises project aims to secure the hall for future generations to enjoy. Thanks to National Lottery players we’re pleased to offer our initial support and look forward to seeing plans develop.”
